I live in a place where no one doubles coupons. Well, that's not entirely true, I suppose. There is one teeny tiny grocery with outrageous party store-esque prices and not much in the way of sales that does double manufacturer's up to 50 cents. When products are priced $2 or $3 more than they are at Meijer, this does not help me at all so I don't count them. Mostly, no one doubles on this side of Michigan. We are the hometown of Fred Meijer and Fred doesn't have much competition around these parts. Sure, there are other stores, but no one rivals the power of MTA.
That being said, the concept of doubles (and triples!) just makes my nerdy coupon brain go nuts. As I mentioned Friday, I had a chance to finally get in on the fun. I'll spare you the coupon details, because it would get all long as complicated.

I did go shopping, as promised. I did not, however, get everything on my list. Some of the items were out of stock, and the others, I just wasn't stoked about the deals once I got there.

Super Saving Saturday
Ok, really, I went shopping yesterday and today. I know, I know, craziness. Why must Meijer have these special weekend sales that persuade me to come back to their store again, but are not amazing enough to convince me to wait until the day of zoo-crazy people to do all of my grocery shopping? Ah, because they are brillant, that's why. Way to go marketing gurus, 1 point for you.
So this past fall, I didn't go grocery shopping for more than 2 months. I think I've mentioned that before. I got caught up in life, we have a giant stockpile of goods to cover the bases during the hiatus, and I was trying to save some serious money in the process. We did hit up the grocery for food for the holidays, but until this week I had not done any real grocery shopping/deal finding in F-O-R-Ever. There are a veritable ton of things we are out of because of it, and although we've been making due pretty well, it was time for some real shopping.
Now, before I post what I picked up, let me preface. I know I said at the beginning of the year that we'd be going to a $120/month grocery budget (for my family of 5). This first month, though, since I happened to come upon some much needed cash after all the other bills were paid, and since we haven't really grocery shopped in a million years, I'm cutting in some extra cash. Yea. That might make me a slacker or a cheater or something, but the point of a challenge is to improve each month. Last year we spent an average of $300/month on groceries (remember, for 5 adults ... not so shabby), so working toward anything less than that is progress enough for me. /preface, haha.

I'm Back! (And do I have deals to prove it!)
I was out of town last weekend and the weekend before, in a land of places that double coupons. Can we talk about excitement? I mean, we hear about doubles all the time, about great deals because of them, about freebies, what is there not to be excited about when visiting an area that enjoys this mystical and magical phenonemon?
Before we go any further, this doubles excitement got me thinking I'm possibly a little crazier than usual. This couponer thing will eat your brain, me thinks. Second, it wasn't that awesome. Yay! I was going to go even bigger and use up my FREE Kraft Singles and FREE Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs coupons as well, but I was kind of tired, it was hot as the dickens in the store, I already knew I had a giant stack of coupons to scan, the Kool Aid selection was pretty slim, and I knew I had to be back to the apartment in 15 minutes to watch Michael Phelps swim in the 400 relay. I also already knew that the Fruit of the Loom and Denim deals were coming out this week, and that Jello was going to be on sale. So, I held back some. Haha. The shoe promo is also still going on, fyi.
It was grand fun shopping, really. I got a nice cashier, and the only one that ended up annoyed was the lady behind me with her two bags of bird seed at ten in the evening. She can get irritated all she wants to. I don't interrupt other people's time with the cashier with huffing and sighing and foot stomping, and I don't expect others to interrupt mine.

When I was wandering around, looking for a One Touch Mini to use my last $20 coupon (they're usually $19.99 regular), I stumbled upon one that was marked $89. I was highly confused, so I glanced next to it, since the Ultra is usually $89, not the Mini, and voila! There was the Ultra with a shiny blue Walgreens price tag reading $19.99. When I checked out, the monitor rang up $68.99 on sale. I pointed out politely that the item was marked lower. The cashier nearly had a stroke and called a manager insisting that she couldn't sell it to me for that price. The laws of this state, and their Fair Pricing statues would disagree, and so did her manager. Then, she rings in everything else and I hand her my coupons. The $20 One Touch was on the top. She insisted she couldn't possibly take that either, as I'd be getting it for FREE! *gasp* If she only knew how many free glucometers I've already gotten at Walgreens this month alone ... la ti da. I send them to the free clinic, fyi, I don't keep them to admire or anything. The manager came back, and without batting an eye took the coupon. Yay! I like good managers.

Again, wacky register, I only really paid $10.69.
When I was wandering around, looking for a One Touch Mini to use my last $20 coupon (they're usually $19.99 regular), I stumbled upon one that was marked $89. I was highly confused, so I glanced next to it, since the Ultra is usually $89, not the Mini, and voila! There was the Ultra with a shiny blue Walgreens price tag reading $19.99. When I checked out, the monitor rang up $68.99 on sale. I pointed out politely that the item was marked lower. The cashier nearly had a stroke and called a manager insisting that she couldn't sell it to me for that price. The laws of this state, and their Fair Pricing statues would disagree, and so did her manager. Then, she rings in everything else and I hand her my coupons. The $20 One Touch was on the top. She insisted she couldn't possibly take that either, as I'd be getting it for FREE! *gasp* If she only knew how many free glucometers I've already gotten at Walgreens this month alone ... la ti da. I send them to the free clinic, fyi, I don't keep them to admire or anything. The manager came back, and without batting an eye took the coupon. Yay! I like good managers.

I *heart* free stuff.
So, I went shopping.
Ha.
That tends to conjure up visions of credit cards and great glossy paper shopping bags. Not here. I don't use credit (anymore), and we use cloth bags someone scored for me from the Women's Expo plus the two recycled boat tarp ones I bought at IKEA. (For the record, Em loves some IKEA ... I'll be there tomorrow actually, muahahaha) There have been some particularly wonderous sales and specials lately, and that plus my adoration of coupons can only mean one thing ... FREEBIES! Yay!
You can check out pictures of the glorious bounty, all laid out on the kitchen table if you like. It's one part bragging rights, one part way easier to put things away. I promise I tried to embed them, but PhotoBucket, Blogger, and I are having a wee tiff over sizing and pixel counts (and I'm not winning). Ok, so I spent $182.68. Wow, that seems like a lot of money now that I posted it. Ick. I do have a $400 per month grocery budget (and a family of five) so it isn't so awful in comparison. The money I used is actually left over from last month. I haven't even tapped into this month's cash yet. I never ever spend the whole $400 in *one* month, but shhhhh, that'll be our secret.
On the other hand, I saved ... $539.86, bringing my savings for the month to $1438.91. Yay! Doesn't that make you want to dance out of the grocery store? Ok, well, it would if it was your $1400 being saved. I have to stop myself from skipping more often than I'd like to 'fess up to.
Now, I have to go figure out this Suave Walgreens deal before it ends. A frugal girl's work is never done. Muahaha.
